Los Potreros welcomes ‘Humi’

Estancia Los Potreros is delighted to welcome Juan Manuel Pizarro, ‘Humi’, to our full-time team as horse manager and resident polo professional.

Like many Argentines, Humi has spent a lifetime around horses. He has worked both in England and more latterly in Kenya as yard manager, whilst pursuing his passion for both polo and horses in general. On the birth of his young son, Humi returned to Rio Ceballos, his local town, with his family, where he started working with us in 2006 providing guest tuition during our polo-focused weeks. Humi currently plays polo off a 3 handicap, and more recently has also taken up the exciting native sport of ‘Pato’ and is a regular participant at local competitions. Humi is a keen advocate of natural horsmanship methods, known as ´Doma Racional´ in Argentina, and his first project has been to build a round corral for his work with the horses.

We are thrilled to have Humi with us, and to benefit from his significant experience with horses - now his only challenge remains to teach Lou and Kevin to play polo properly!

Apologies to Mr Baxter . . .

We would like to make a formal apology to Mr Baxter for introducing his two daughters to the ´sport of kings’ - polo. It is no doubt the start of an extremely expensive period in his life as the demands for polo helmets, sticks, knee pads, polo ponies, tournament fees, lessons, etc etc start to mount up. The girls were so desperate to take it up when they returned to England that they resourcefully made use of what they had available . . .with some interesting results . . .!

Lost and found!

Well, the last few days we have lost and found quite a few things here on the farm!

LOST - one little black and white lamb

FOUND - one little black and white lamb, upside down, legs in the air, in a fence post hole

LOST - one leggy foal, who didn’t come in with the others when brought in at night

FOUND - one leggy foal, down a large ´hole’ at the bottom of a stream bed, unhurt, just slightly surprised (found after 3 hours searching in the pitch black!)

LOST - 100 black cows, reported heading down to the local town

FOUND - 100 black cows, safe and sound at home. It was our neighbour herding his own cows that caused the fuss!

Never a dull day . . .

Los Pots moves into the 21st century!

And so here is the first entry into the Los Potreros ´blog´! Irregular news of the farm whenever we get round to it for all of you who wonder what we are up to .

Kevin and Lou returned from their honeymoon to the first real snow on the farm since 2001. Buenos Aires beat us by having their first snow in 89 years! Some very patient guests came with us on the coldest ride ever, with all the horses (and ourselves) covered in frost . . .
