Keep it in the family!

in-the-family1

We were just heading out on a ride yesterday on some of our fabulous Pasos when we realised that all of the horses were related and couldn’t resist a photo opportunity! All are either related to Mariscal, a legendary stallion from some years ago, or the very wonderful mare Dina, who went to her happy grazing ground in the sky earlier this year. Their legacy lives on - once ridden, forever smitten! From left to right:

Negro El Once - son to Mariscal, daughter to Dina

Picasita - daughter to Mariscal, daughter to Dina, full sister to Negro 11

Barry - son to Mariscal

Sol - son of Dina

China - daughter of Dina

Chilenito, Tosco, Soldado, Cuervo - all sons of Sol, so grandchildren of Dina

Mirror, mirror, on the wall . . .

Who is the beautifullest of them all??!!

Little LB Aurora of course! Not that Lou is biased of course, but this is the little filly from her mare Ruana, born 16th December 2007. Purebred Paso, she has plenty of ‘brio’ (spirit) and just loves cuddles with the guests. As you can see, she already knows that she is going to be the queen of the estancia one day . . .

Just another New Years Eve . . .

Happy New Year to everyone, and wishing all a peaceful and happy 2008!

We are in the middle of a hot, dry summer, and New Years Eve was no exception here on the estancia. The traditional morning polo game was followed by an afternoon ‘photo shoot’ for our guests. This involved herding our ‘chucurros’ (unbroken young horses) up a track at a flat out gallop as the sun sets behind. Sounds great? Well - as usual the horses were smarter from us, and as you can see from the photo there wasn’t much galloping going on . . .in fact they were more interested in the large group of tourists stood like a bunch of ninnies in the field with their cameras out!

In fact the only galloping going on was by our trusty gaucho, who also saved the day photographically as we eagerly snapped up photos of him and his horse looking just a little worn out!

Why the big grin?

I guess you would be grinning too if you had just been told that you have half a dozen girlfriends ready and waiting for you!

The Big Cheese has arrived!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the arrival of our new stallion - “Tukanka Templador”. He is full Paso Peruano, with a lineage going back to the first classic stallions brought to Argentina from Peru. At 14 years old he has plenty of years ahead of him, and is very tame to ride. He has all of the classic Peruvian characteristics - heavy, triangular neck; short back; long stomach; plenty of depth between shoulder and girth; and a fabulous ‘paso’ action with the high knees and ‘flick’ of the hooves. And of course, it is like riding an armchair! We have plenty of girlfriends lined up for him, so he is certainly going to be busy . . .

Lucky Lou!

It is not always great hitting the big four-oh (or should it be OHHHHHH!), but life sometimes does have its little compensations . . .like this beautiful Paso Peruano mare called ‘Ruana’ that Kevin gave Lou for her birthday this week. And she comes with another little surprise . . .she is 10 months pregnant to a fabulous stallion called Lucas, so we have yet another new arrival to wait for!

Round corral techniques

The increased use of round corrals or pens has often been credited to Monty Roberts, due to the way that he brought natural horsemanship techniques to the forefront. One of the principles underpinning natural horsemanship is that the trainer mimics and uses natural horse behaviour to bring on the young horse.

Here, Humi has already established himself as the ‘leader of the herd’ with this young mare, and he has asked her to stop and come to him just using body language.
