Pompeya Polo Tournament 2009

And so finally the big day arrived!

Whilst Buenos Aires is the undisputed capital of the polo-playing community in Argentina, there is a thriving low to medium goal circuit in Cordoba, with 6 excellent sets of grounds within about half an hour of each other. It was at one of these, Pompeya Polo Club in Ascochinga, where the season has kicked off this weekend with a 3 day tournament of polo, pato and endurance riding.

This year it is Lou’s turn to represent the estancia, and so her and the horses set off early Friday morning. For the horses, it is a bit like going from playing football in the back garden to playing at Wembley stadium, but as usual they took it all in their stride - at least a bit more than Lou did!

On their way

There are two things that are particularly interesting about polo in Argentina. One is the low-key, non-fussy and non-pretentious approach to the whole thing. Ponies are delivered to the polo grounds in open-top cattle trucks (even at the highest levels), blankets are mde out of old feed bags and spectators will sit on the boards round the grounds.

The other thing of note is that polo here is almost entirely a male preserve, and so in the whole tournament only one female player other than Lou has been spotted . . .which makes for fast, furious and sometimes quite intimidating play.

So Lou and the intrepid Los Pots ponies headed into their game of polo ‘threes’ (3 a side) with knees a-trembling. Thence followed four fast and furious chukkas (that felt more like an hour each than 7 minutes - to Lou at least!) - 1-0 to us, 1-3 to them, 4-4 all square and finally 5-5 at the end of the fourth chukka. More than a little relieved that it was all over, Lou headed to the sidelines, only to find that because it was a draw there was to be a ‘golden goal’ in a fifth chukka. So back onto the ground to take up the battle once again. 3 minutes later and the oponents scored, so a final score of 5-6 to them.

Lou, the ponies and everyone else in one piece, and certainly not a drubbing, so all in all a successful day. Second game on Friday . . .watch this space!

Las Chicas 4 . . .Los Gauchos 5!!!!

Well, it is always the most anticipated polo game of the year . . .the Styler family versus the Beggs and the gauchos.

Now in its third year the stakes are dangerously high. If the Beggs lose, the youngest Styler player gets her trip free the following year. If the Stylers lose, the same daughter has to spend her holiday cleaning Kevin`s boots. This year we had a sparkling clean car and a swimming pool free of bugs as well, and poor Issy missed out on all her siestas.

We awoke to glorious sunshine, and much debate over which horses were to be ridden, how was the ground, was Lou out of the running because of old age, and most importantly what was everyone going to wear . . .there was nearly a massive family feud as young Tom Styler arrived wearing Los Pots colours, and declaring to everyone that would listen that he thought the gauchos were going to win.

Las Chicas certainly looked very scary, dressed all in white with war paint on the faces. Kevin and Lou also looked scary but they were just dressed as themselves. Things were certainly tense as they left for the polo ground, and even Cheeseface was heard to grunt a few times.

With Mrs Styler as the completely unbiased referee, the first chukka was hard fought, with Lou marked out of the game by a particularly tenacious H. Kevin managed to strike a hit between the horses legs and land a goal, so Los Gauchos were 1 - 0 up.

The second chukka showed a tremendous fightback from Las Chicas, with some particularly ferocious tackling by the Styler girls (Lou is still picking the hair from her horses ears out of her teeth), and with Emmas and Annies surefire hitting a swift goal put everyone deservedly level at half time.

Into the third chukka, and as the war paint started to slide down the Chicas faces, so Luis managed to slide between the oppositions horses, and some nifty work by Jose and Kevin took the gauchos to 4-1 up.

The final chukka proved to be the most exciting, with Las Chicas quickly pulling back a goal in the first few seconds, followed by some fast and furious play. Two penalties in the last 2.5 seconds took the teams to the final score . . .Las Chicas 4, Los Gauchos 5.

Girls . . .our boots are ready and waiting . . .

Los Potreros Polo Open

Many people would believe, mistakenly, that the Argentine Open held at Palermo is the main event in the polo calendar worldwide. Those really in the know, would recognise that this is not the case. Nothing, but nothing, beats the Los Potreros Polo Open, held last weekend, for thrills, spills, referee nobbling, emotional language and generally lots of Argentine passion.

The tournament was held as the culmination of a polo week at Los Potreros, with four teams entering, and with individual players with handicaps of 5 down to those whose main handicap was their own appalling playing. It was, as always, a family affair, with Lou and Kevin pitted against each other as husband and wife, and Humi pitted against his brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, second cousin, neighbours dog, etc etc. We were also delighted to welcome as our guest player, Grant Bovey, ably supported by his wife Anthea Turner, who between them at the very least brought a bit of dignity to the proceedings.

As usual, when Kevin picks the horses, teams and referees as well (along with threatening to sack Humi if he didn’t win), it was a completely balanced and even competition, with his team winning by 6-3 in the final. Congratulations to Grant, Nestor, Fran and of course the ‘patron’ Kevin.  For the record, Humi was last seen in one of our rather larger fields (about 1,000 acres of mountainous terrain) with a wheelbarrow and a fork picking up droppings, due to Lou´s sense of humour failure about losing to her husband once again.

Argentine Polo Open

Lou and Kevin were lucky enough to sneak away for a weekend to watch the Quarter Finals of the Argentine Polo Open at Palermo in Buenos Aires.

This championship is the premier polo championship in the world, and is the only place where you can see all of the best players together. Teams range this year in handicap from 29 to 39, and of the 8 teams competing, 7 are all-Argentine!

It was a great privilege to watch these teams at work, who make what is often a fairly aggressive sport look something like ballet on horseback! The level of play and horsemanship is simply extraordinary. For us relative novices watching, Adolfo Cambiaso (picture below) simply stood out above the rest, and received a standing ovation for one of his plays. But my money for now is on Ellerstina . . .watch this space!

Glorious in defeat! Or did we win?

Last week, Los Potreros proudly entered a team into a ‘Polo three’s’ tournament, held over a long weekend at a nearby polo estancia called ´Pompeya’. The awesome threesome consisted of (left to right), Humi ‘if we don’t win I´ll eat my hat’ Pizarro, Kevin ‘if we don’t win I´ll make Humi eat his hat’ Begg, and Plomo ‘everyone else will eat my hat because I can’t control my horses’!!

The first round went extremely well, with a resounding win for the Los Pots Hotties! Kevin returned wondering whether Cambiaso would like to come for a training session with him to pick up a few tips, after scoring 3 goals. The second round on Friday was a little more sobering, when their opposition (Humi’s retired uncle and a twelve year old) took their team to a 5-4 win against our local heroes.

Unfortunately after that, rain stopped play, and the remaining game in the qualifying rounds was decided on penalties against some strange handicapping system, that meant that our team returned crestfallen, having not reached the finals. Humi is still convinced that our team won though, so that is good enough for us!

A particular mention of thanks and applause to our lovely and very patient horses, who took all of this in their stride (literally), but were extremely happy to get back home to their green fields and our happy-go-lucky weekly polo amongst friends, watched only by a couple of hopeful vultures . . .

Player of the match!

Following an impromptu polo tournament on Sunday, player of the match award went to Niamh Maloney - which was pretty good considering she had got straight off a bus onto a horse after a 12 hour journey with no sleep!

Los Pots hopefuls

Humi has recently bought 9 new polo horses for the estancia for the season, and they start their training today. We have the first Los Potreros tournament the first weekend in November, and then Kevin and Humi are representing the estancia in a local tournament the following weekend  . . .Kevin will need to go into training as much as the horses!

Los Potreros welcomes ‘Humi’

Estancia Los Potreros is delighted to welcome Juan Manuel Pizarro, ‘Humi’, to our full-time team as horse manager and resident polo professional.

Like many Argentines, Humi has spent a lifetime around horses. He has worked both in England and more latterly in Kenya as yard manager, whilst pursuing his passion for both polo and horses in general. On the birth of his young son, Humi returned to Rio Ceballos, his local town, with his family, where he started working with us in 2006 providing guest tuition during our polo-focused weeks. Humi currently plays polo off a 3 handicap, and more recently has also taken up the exciting native sport of ‘Pato’ and is a regular participant at local competitions. Humi is a keen advocate of natural horsmanship methods, known as ´Doma Racional´ in Argentina, and his first project has been to build a round corral for his work with the horses.

We are thrilled to have Humi with us, and to benefit from his significant experience with horses - now his only challenge remains to teach Lou and Kevin to play polo properly!

Apologies to Mr Baxter . . .

We would like to make a formal apology to Mr Baxter for introducing his two daughters to the ´sport of kings’ - polo. It is no doubt the start of an extremely expensive period in his life as the demands for polo helmets, sticks, knee pads, polo ponies, tournament fees, lessons, etc etc start to mount up. The girls were so desperate to take it up when they returned to England that they resourcefully made use of what they had available . . .with some interesting results . . .!
